Djaul Bakal Association

To see all the people of Djaul Island develop and prosper economically, socially, mentally, and spiritually. We want to see our living standards rise, peace and justice prevail, and our culture and heritage maintained and respected.

History

Working to maintain culture and heritage

The Djaul Bakal Association Inc is a modern entity that  represents the traditional Melanesian organisation of society. It embodies the traditional government structures where
“houseboys” resembled the modern-day house of assembly.

We have existed for thousands of years and have unofficially played major roles in maintaining our culture and bonding the community. We are now registered and recognised by the PNG government through IPA on the 6 of May 2021.

Although we are physically on Djaul Island, we acknowledge our historical origins and family ties. We still reach out to our neighbouring tribes and peoples across the province of New Ireland to partake in cultural events, share in cultural obligations/rituals, and celebrate achievements and mourn losses.

Promoting culture and artefacts

We endeavour to deliver community-based projects that transforms the lives of our rural
and remote people. We want to deliver health, education, WASH, literacy, and lively-hood
projects through partnerships with the government, donor organisations, and other NGOs.
We want to initiate activities that will trigger local business opportunities that will
strengthen local economy.

FUNERARY TOTEMS

The ephemeral Malagan carvings of northern New Ireland, are among the most intricate sculptures in Oceania.

The most spectacular Malagan carvings are created and displayed during the final memorial ceremony honouring the deceased, which, due to the great expense and extensive preparations involved, often occurs months or years after a person’s death. The carvings constitute a visual résumé of the deceased’s achievements in obtaining Malagan rites.

The totem above is on display at The Met 5th Avenue in New York. It is from the late 19th Century, and was donated to the Museum in 2007
