History

The Djaul Bakal Association

The Djaul Bakal Association Inc is a modern entity that represents the traditional Melanesian organisation of society. It embodies the traditional government structures where “houseboys” resembled the modern day house of assembly.

We have existed for thousands of years and have unofficially played major roles in maintaining our culture and bonding the community. We are now registered and recognised by the PNG government through IPA on the 6 of May 2021.

Although we are physically on Djaul Island, we acknowledge our historical origins and family ties. We still reach out to our neighbouring tribes and peoples across the province of New Ireland to partake in cultural events, share in cultural obligations/rituals, and celebrate achievements and mourn losses.

Who are we

The Djaul Bakal Association

We are an indigenous organisation from Djaul Island, Papua New Guinea who want to see development on our island. We are non profit tasked at giving a voice to our people on the island. The people of Djaul Island comprise of 7 villages that speak the languages of Tiang and Tigak respectively with a population of over 4000. We have been marginalised because of leadership, illiteracy, remoteness, rurality, and limited discontinuous economic spin-offs.

We are an island community that survive on the land and the sea. We are currently experiencing the effects of sea-level rising and climate change. We look for projects that will address these issues and how best our lives can be adjusted to suit these changes.

We hope this platform will usher in sustainable community development projects, improve health and education standards, strengthen law & order, and create economic spin-offs. We are looking for partnership in development and are willing to put up sweat equity for
development
